I have been away for a wedding and could not post for few days. I wanted to share this wonderful TED ( Houston) talk by Brene Brown.

I had come across Brene Brown while reading a blog post by Dr.Lilian Cheung who had written book with Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. I found Brene Brown extremely persuasive and fun and stumbled on this popular Ted talk 🙂The transcript is available at:Brene Brown is a researcher and professor who has studied Shame and Vulnerability in her decade long research and comes out with a insight that the reason for disconnection is shame and what underpinned shame was excruciating vulnerability. It is her conclusion that vulnerability is bed rock of shame, fear but also joy, belonging, creativity and love.In her qualitative research she arrived at two sets of people: people who have a strong sense of love and belonging and folks who struggle for it.

She says people who have a strong sense of love and belonging simply believe they are worthy of love and belonging. She calls these people as ” Whole hearted people who have a deep sense of worthiness”. I loved the term “Whole hearted” people 🙂 It got me interested more. She shared her findings that the whole hearted people have following traits:– Courage– Compassion– Connection– Vulnerability. These are people who have courage to be imperfect, have a strong sense of compassion to self and others, have connection based on authenticity and embraced vulnerability. They believed being vulnerable made them beautiful. To quote from the talk ” They talked about the willingness to say, “I love you” first, the willingness to do something where there are no guarantees, the willingness to breathe through waiting for the doctor to call after your mammogram. They’re willing to invest in a relationship that may or may not work out. They thought this was fundamental.”Dr. Brown further says she decided to research why we are not able to make choices like wholehearted people and why do we struggle with vulnerability?

She did a online survey that says, “How would you define vulnerability? Some of the response were:– Having to ask my husband for help because I’m sick, and we’re newly married– Initiating sex with my husband-Initiating sex with my wife– Being turned down; asking someone out– Waiting for the doctor to call back– Getting laid off-Laying off peopleGuess we live in a deeply vulnerable world. She further states the way we deal with it is we numb vulnerability.

We also make uncertain things like religion which should be mystical and faith based certain. She says something illuminating about politics that there is no discourse or a conversation, just blame. The other instructive point was children are hard wired for struggle but they need and are worthy of love and belonging at all times. Perhaps this should solve so many struggles and painful consequences whether its delinquency or may be even loss of lives and rabid killingsFinally she says there is a another way to Live:– To be seen, deeply seen, to connect– To love with-our whole hearts even if there are no guarantees– Practice gratitude and Joy– To deeply feel ” Iam enough”I concur with above and my own search has made me deeply realise value of ” Iam enough ”, that’s another post 🙂Hope you like this talk, its nice, insightful and fun 🙂 Thank you!
